Venturing Out into Uncharted Waters

Fall? It may still technically be summer, but in terms of activities the fall school season is upon us. Hopefully over the summer we have all taken some time to reflect and recalibrate our lives so that this next year we live and do life in a way that is sustainable. It is easier said than done. However, that doesn’t mean we keep doing the same things only better. In my case there are things that I do want to do better, but I know that part of growing is venturing out into uncharted waters…so I am in a couple of areas.
The first is that today I am writing my first blog. Since I have never done it before I am not sure how often I’ll post or exactly what the content will be, but hopefully it will be a reflection of my journey with God in the context of leading Church in the City.
The second avenue of embarking into uncharted waters is that yesterday, at gunpoint, my wife forced me to start a Facebook page. I can see the value, fun and potential of be a part of that virtual community. Already I have started reconnecting with people I have been out of touch with for years…people I love and appreciate but have not managed to keep in contact with. That’s the good news. The bad news is there is a “dark side” that we can be drawn into. The dangers of both blogging and Facebook are that they have the potential to be a blackhole for the precious time I have been allocated in this life. They are both worth the risk, but will have to managed well. It will be a matter of balance.
In essence, that is the invitation for life that God has given all of us. It is about keeping first things first…God, family, church family, job and relationships…being infilled with person and power of God so that my life can be a source of life and encouragement to others in any context we meet…in prayer, in person, on a blog, or Facebook. That is one of the points Jesus makes in Matthew 6 where we are looking at how Jesus taught those who follow Him to pray…connect…converse, talk or any other term we might think of for deep, life giving, empowering relationship. I am looking forward to growing together as we explore Conversations with God. Join us on Sundays at 10:00 a.m. if you can or catch the messages online. Have a great week.
Blessings, Dave
